What is Craniosacral Therapy?

by August 26, 2022

I am often asked to say exactly how this techniques works, and honestly, it can be difficult to describe! So I will do my best here to highlight what I find to be the most important aspects of Craniosacral therapy, and to bring a better understanding of just how it works.

When practicing Craniosacral therapy, I evaluate and treat a client through assessing the Craniosacral rhythm, assessing the subtle movement of cranial bones, spine and sacrum, and treating any restrictions or loss of movement that affects the body.

Assessing Craniosacral rhythm (CSR) means monitoring the flow of Cerebrospinal fluid through your head, down your spinal column to your pelvis and back up. It is a natural rhythm that everyone has, and the flow is constant. Once the CSR is noted, then I begin to feel where your system may have a restriction which causes the rhythm to be affected.

Cupping Therapy with Meredith Johnson

by August 26, 2022

Cupping has become one of my “go to” treatments because it consistently helps my clients. The positive results from cupping include significant pain reduction and increased mobility. Cupping provides a type of Myofascial release treating a layer of tissue that is commonly overlooked. I have had great success with clients with a variety of diagnosis. Here are a couple of examples;

One client had injured her knee and had two knee surgeries. Following the surgeries she had chronic pain affecting her entire leg. She had received PT, massage, and still was not able to walk without pain. This client came to me specifically for Cupping. Her results were amazing. After several cupping sessions she is now walking easily and hiking up to an hour without pain.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need a prescription for Physical Therapy Treatment?

In Alabama a PT is able to see a Patient for an Evaluation without a prescription or ‘script’ from your provider. All following visits REQUIRE a signed script from your provider.

2. Do I need a prescription for Physical Therapy Treatment?
Providers that may sign a PT prescription include; MD, DO, Chiropractor, Nurse Practitioner, Podiatrist, Dentist.

3. Do I need a prescription for Wellness Care?
In Alabama a PT may provide WELLNESS care to clients without the need for a prescription from your provider.

4. How often will I need to be treated, and for how long?
There are several factors that determine both frequency and longevity of care. These factors include acute versus chronic condition, severity of symptoms, general health, and type of therapy services desired. Typically during early stages of treatment you would be expected to have treatment once per week, but this often quickly diminishes to 1-2 treatments per month. Individuals receiving Cranial-Sacral therapy require time between sessions to allow their body to integrate the manual work received, and may have treatment only once per month depending on needs.

5. What should I wear ?
It is important that your therapist be able to ‘see’ your system for accurate assessment, and skin-to-skin contact is needed for most manual techniques. It is best to wear comfortable, loose clothing including shorts, sports bra, or camisoles.

6. How will I feel after a session?
It is common for clients to feel fatigued following a session, and often to feel a little sore or ‘punky’. This can last for a few hours, and usually resolves within 24-48 hours.

Others may also feel some immediate relief. If your symptoms are more chronic in nature it is important to know that symptoms will typically diminish in severity and frequency over time…try not to be discouraged if results are not immediately complete.

7. When will I experience results?
Some patients do experience immediate relief from symptoms, but for most it takes a few sessions before positive changes are strong. Each persons recovery is unique.

Insurance Information

One of our defining beliefs at True Nroth is that therapeutic manual therapy is profoundly healing. Working this way affords us time to work holistically with each client for optimal results. However, it often does not fit into typical PT insurance timeframes. For this reason, we made the decision to work as an ‘Out-of-Network’ or a ‘Non-Participating’ Provider. This means that we do not accept any insurance, and patients are required to provide payment on the day of treatment (we accept credit cards, checks and cash). We provide PT clients with a receipt to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. These receipts have all required information Insurance companies need for reimbursement.

Because True North does not accept insurance, it is strongly recommended that you contact your insurance company IN ADVANCE of your first appointment o find out what your ‘Out of Network’ benefits are for Physical Therapy. Wellness care is not covered under insurance, but yo may use your ‘Flexible Health Account’ to pay for treatments.

Some recommended questions for insurance carriers:

  1. Do I have ‘Out of Network’ Physical Therapy coverage? If so, what percentage of treatment cost will be covered?
  2. What is my deductible and has it been met this calendar year?
  3. How many PT sessions does my policy cover each calendar year?
  4. Is there an annual cap in PT coverage?
